Report - St Peter's Primary - Patchwork-Quilt Collage at St Peter's 20th June 2007
To celebrate 500 schools in Scotland achieving Green Flag status, the Eco-schools programme has invited each flag-bearing school to submit a patchwork-quilt square of fabric that reflects their own eco-school experience. Each square will be sewn together to create a stunning display that will be unveiled at "Our Dynamic Earth" in Edinburgh in September. A group of St Peter's primary pupils gathered at lunchtime from Easter to Summer to create their "happy eco-garden square" as part of the 500th Green Flag celebration. Using an old pillow case, buttons, threads and ribbons they carefully stitched their patchwork-quilt collage to depict a happy summer garden. Chief stitcher, P6 pupil, Dylan Mitchell stated, "I enjoyed these lunchtime sessions. I think it will be great to find our work in the completed 500 square display in Edinburgh." Amanda Montgomery and Caitlin Liddell also said: "We used lots of recycled bits and pieces. We didn't buy anything to make this, and yet it looks brand new." Many other P4, 5 & 6 pupils lent a hand to stitch on buttons, ribbons and threads, and learned to use a needle and thread for the very first time! St Peter's was the first primary school in the Dumbarton area to be awarded the Green Flag for its work in the 7 key areas of the eco-schools programme in 2006.
